This year’s country
in focus at the International Film Festival of Kerala (IFFK) is Nigeria. Culture,
social life, marital discords, illicit relationships are being told in these
films. Seven films from Nigeria are screened in this section.
Nigerian
director and alumni of Film and Television Institute of India(FTII), Niji Akani
‘s two movies, ‘Aramotu’ and ‘Heroes and Zeroes’ are included in the section. ‘Aramotu”
speaks on women empowerment, by striking a fine balance between traditional
movies and contemporary realities. Ramesh Babu, is the cinematographer for
Aramotu. The film has won six African Movie academy awards in 2011 including
best director, best picture and best Nigerian film. ‘Heroes and Zeros’ have won
the academy award for its script, portray the up and downs in the life of a
director.
Mother of George |
Andrew Dosunmu’s
‘Mother of George’, is about the conflict between, tradition, freedom, culture,
individuality, personality and responsibility. It portrays the transition from
a lady, to a mother and evolution accompanying it. The film has won the award for
best cinematography at the Sundance film festival.
The Figurine |
‘The Figurine’ echoes
the rich myths of Africa. The story plays the accord between two friends whose
fortune and bad luck in association with a deserted idol they found. Kunle Afo
Layan, the director himself plays the protagonist in the film. ’The Figurine’ has
won five awards at the African Movie
Academy in 2010, including Best
Picture, ‘Heart of Africa’,
AMAA Achievement in Cinematography
and AMAA Achievement in Visual Effect.
‘Phone Swap’ from the same director in the section mirrors the urban life and plays
the story of a man and women whose phones get swapped.
Kenneth Gyang’s ‘Confusion
Na Wa’, describes the story of a group of strangers on a particular day. The
film won the”Best Picture” award at the African Movie Academy awards. ‘Thunderbolt
‘directed by Tunte Kelani deals with love and adultery.
These seven
films will prove to be insightful to the Nigerian life.
